and the investigation was under way at 8:35 P.M.
Anne pulled me aside - out of earshot of the others - and told me she had walked through the building and had experienced extremely strong feelings of negative energy or pressure as she went down the steps to the basement.
Meanwhile, Peter was touring the building and recording the layout with a camcorder. When he returned he pulled me aside and said he felt very strange when he walked through two locations - the bottom of the stairs leading to the basement and a dark aisle of bookshelves in the far right corner of the second floor balcony. He described the sensation as one of "atmospheric pressure or compression." He had not spoken with Anne yet and had no knowledge of what she had sensed in the basement. I scanned these areas for unusual electromagnetic fields with a Tri-Field Meter but with negative results. Peter felt the strangeness has left the areas. I didn't tell anyone about Peter's sensations because I wanted to see if they would pick up independently on anything in the upper balcony area.
We did background scans of all the rooms to record ambient electromagnetic (EMF), electrical, and radiation levels. Everything was within normal parameters. I accompanied Anne on another in-depth tour, instructing her to note any locations where she felt a presence so I could re-scan the area for spikes or anomalous readings. Unfortunately, Anne reported she felt the presence had left the building or become dormant. I repeated these controlled excursions with the other team members, but everyone felt the earlier negative atmosphere had lifted. Further EMF and environmental scans throughout the night were negative.
At about 12:30 A.M. Anne and Gerry did another tour of the facility. Gerry has demonstrated strong psychic sensi

tivity in the past and has been working with Anne to develop this gift. Peter and Art videotaped the premises. Art was also using extremely sensitive audio surveillance equipment, typically used by law enforcement, in an attempt to pick up any anomalous sounds that might be beyond the sensitivity range of the human ear and the videocameras.
Anne and Gerry called to me from the upper balcony, wanting me to run an energy scan in the far right aisle. Anne said she again felt the negative energy she had experienced in the basement. Gerry reported that he felt a cold, tingling sensation in his arm and a feeling of "pressure, an oppressive atmosphere." Neither of them knew of Peter's encounter in the exact same location.
When I reached the aisle, I couldn't sense anything unusual. Anne said she could feel the presence leaving. She said she had also felt the presence in the ground floor aisle below this one. Scans at both levels revealed normal background EMF levels. I set up infrared-thermal surveillance units covering the two active aisles, as well as one in a quiet aisle to be used as a control.
At about 2 A.M. I was standing outside the staff kitchen with library assistants Pam and Brooke. Art was in the reading room running electronic surveillance. Pam and Brooke had been telling me how the ghost often plays havoc with the library's computer system, leading employees to suspect that Phyllis does not like the intrusion of modern technology into her house. They pointed out that Phyllis might be put off by the equipment our ghost-hunting team had brought in.
As I stood in the hallway with my camera in my right hand, we were startled by a loud electrical pop. The camera's shutter, motor drive and handle-mount strobe began firing on continuous,
